June 13, 2020 10:00 am PDT
Join with community as we connect with Spirit of Place on a guided hike with our team leader and naturalist, Caren. Take a rejuvenating and informative few hours away from your wifi and cell phones and give yourself the gift of calm, clarity and creative thinking. Rebalance your nature in Nature!
All ages, all abilities and dogs on leash are welcome.
Physical distancing of 2 metres please. The trails are very wide making it easy to accommodate extra space for walking.
Directions: From Victoria take the Pat Bay Highway #17 to the Royal Oak turnoff. Turn left onto Royal Oak and the highway overpass and then turn right onto Elk Lake Drive. Approximately 1.5 kilometres up the road on the left is the entrance to the park. Turn in here and drive through the park past the first large main parking lot at Beaver Lake Beach. Continue on to the second smaller parking lot and the picnic shelter at the second beach. There is plenty of parking but as always, carpooling is recommended.
Hike Details: We will meet at the picnic area at Beaver beach and start our hike on the main trail from there. This trail circumnavigates both Beaver and Elk Lakes, passing through several areas including the fishing pier, the waterski and horse beach, boat launch, Hamsterly and Eagle beaches, the Rowing Club, Nature House and the dog training grounds before returning to Beaver beach. The hike is designated as easy and features a 10 ft. wide path all the way around both Lakes. The Lakes and the entire surrounding park are rich in local history and we will be exploring as we go along, while talking about the abundant natural flora and fauna in this beautiful and diverse area.
The entire length of the trail is approximately 10km. Average time spent is about 2.5 to 3 hrs. We will take short breaks along the way, so the actual length of time will be determined by the participants.
If need be, arrangements can be made for a vehicle to be positioned mid-way at the waterski beach or boat launch for anyone who wishes to return to the parking lot.
Washrooms are available at the parking lot, boat launch, public beaches and Rowing Club.
What to Bring: Bring a lunch or snack, bottled water and beverage as well as a walking stick and camera if desired.
Wear: Comfortable and sturdy shoes, a hat and appropriate clothing for the weather, rain or shine. Dressing in layers is recommended for this type of activity. Bring sunscreen and bug repellent if necessary.
